Brancaster Brewery takes its name from Brancaster Staithe, a north Norfolk village steeped in brewing history. Located in the heart of prime barley growing terroir, records show brewing here dates back to Roman times. So great was the demand for barley from this area that reputedly the country's largest malthouse was built in Brancaster in 1797, yards from The Jolly Sailors pub. Ironically the malthouse was built using bricks salvaged from the nearby Roman fort! See 'A brief history and tasting notes

While the malthouse no longer stands, Brancaster Brewery is keeping a brewing tradition alive in north Norfolk by producing quality ales from the finest regional produce.

Since taking over the leasehold of The Jolly Sailors pub in February 2009, which inherited a brewery, the Nye family have concentrated on returning the pub to its former glory with sympathetic restoration and reinstating the brewery.

Brancaster Brewery is a 5 barrel brewery and produces small batches of high quality real ale using top quality local ingredients. It produces bottle conditioned ale, rather than cold filtered, to ensure the beer is in peak condition when it reaches the customer.

The staple ales are Brancaster Best 3.8% a refreshing session ale with a touch of citrus on the finish,  Malthouse Bitter 4.2% a mid amber ale with malty character with distinct bitterness on the finish. Various seasonal ales are produced during the year including Oystercatcher 4.4% a sunshine golden ale, refreshing and moreish and The Wreck 4.8% a full bodied ale with hints of molasses and sweet coffee.

If you're in the area visit newly opened  Hermitage rd., our new sister establishment in Hitchin Hertfordshire, state of the art bar & restaurant and coffee bar.

THE WRECK wins Octoberfest

The Wreck was a clear winner in the Old English Ales tasting Octoberfest recently held at the Real Ale Shop at Branthill Farm, Wells next the Sea. All ales entered into the 'fest' are all  bottle conditioned ales brewed with malt made from  2009 Maris Otter barley grown on Mr Maufe's farm at Branthill.

A distinguished panel of four judged the competition including Tim Hampson, chairman of the British Guild of Beer Writers who was very impressed by the overall standard. 'Norfolk has some of the very best micro-breweries in the country', said Teddy Maufe owner of The Real Ale Shop at Branthill.
